Last month, Marvel shocked the comic world by revealing that the moral compass of the Marvel Universe, Captain America, was and always had been a Hydra double agent. Based on the reaction, many fans saw this as some sort of unacceptable slap in the face to one of comics longest running heroes whilst others believed it was merely a bluff that would be resolved before you could say ‘Hail Hydra’. With Captain America: Steve Rogers #2 hitting shelves this week, we finally have our answer. Read on to find out.
The preview for the second issue has revealed that the memory’s that Rogers had of his indoctrination into Hydra as a youngster were actually implanted by Kobik, the sentient Cosmic Cube introduced as part of the ‘Avengers Standoff’ arc earlier in the year. It was also revealed that it was longtime foe Red Skull who was behind this plot turn the world against one of its greatest heroes. Although, it should still be noted that he did still throw Jack Flag from a helicopter, which should really come with repercussions whether he was brainwashed or not.
While this has no doubt come as a relief to fans who were concerned that they were rewriting 75 years of comic history, it still comes across as a cheap ploy in order to drum up interest. It also doesn’t reveal whether this will be a temporary change or whether it will be ongoing for the time being. Could we be seeing Cap as a villain for a while longer?
You can check out the preview panels below, or you can pick up Captain America: Steve Rogers #2 when its shelves this week.
