Horror fans for years have been clamoring for a big-budget fighting game to battle one another as their favorite slasher and monster icons, and it seems that may be an inevitable possibility – from the makers of Mortal Kombat, no less.
Netherrealm has been gradually introducing these types of villains into these games starting with their DLC for the 2011 reboot by including the Jackie Earle Haley variant of Freddy Krueger. The next game took this step further, by including Jason Voorhees, the Predator, an Alien Xenomorph, and Jason Voorhees.
And, according to Game Informer who asked Netherrealm during the Mortal Kombat X Pro League Finals in Los Angeles, there may be more to this than fans think:
“Yes, yes! You know, as we’ve been accumulating them, that idea has been coming up more and more frequently,” said Boon when asked about the possibility of a horror-themed fighting game. “You brought it up and a few other people have brought it up like ‘why don’t you do a horror movie fighting game?’ Maybe one day we’ll do it.”
With that said, it’s all up to the fans – so if you want to see this possibility come true, continue to ask Netherrealm and show interest for such a project. Maybe one day it just might happen; and just think of all the endless potential. Playing as Evil Dead’s Ash Williams against Pinhead from Hellraiser? Now that’s what I’d call a video game.
