Roland Emmerich, director of such cinematic gems as Godzilla (16% Rotten Tomatoes score), 10,000BC (8%) and 2012 (39%) has gone on record several times to express his disdain for Comic book movies but now the German born director has gone one step further and accused the comic companies of stealing his style.
Whilst promoting his latest film Independence Day: Resurgence (34%), Emmerich explained to Loaded Online:
“I felt that when I saw some of these Marvel movies, or DC movies from Warners, I felt, ‘Oh my, God, that looks familiar to me. Why is Superman bashing so many buildings?” Before adding:
“I was actually warned already by Steven Spielberg that this will happen. He said Independence Day will be the most imitated film of the next 20 years, and he was right. Smart man.”
The Universal Soldier (19%) director, was also asked if he had any interest in directing a film in the future to which unsurprisingly, he didn’t seem open to telling the site:
“Very early in my career I was offered one or two of those, but it’s not my kind of film. I grew up in Germany and we weren’t big on superheroes to begin with. Actually, they didn’t work as well as everywhere else in the world. Only now they work very well. I just also felt that I wanted to make my own films. I pride myself to make originals. Even Independence Day: Resurgence is, I think, quite original for a sequel because it’s more the continuation of the story.”
Destruction has featured in films for a long time, even as far as the original Godzilla film series back in the fifties. Emmerich was just the first to use computer generated effects to achieve it on a widespread and believable level. Now that the technology exists, studios are able to use it more frequently in films and even on T.V.
You can check out Independence Day: Resurgence in theaters now.
