Next year sees Marvel’s return to world of AAA Gaming with Insomniac Games and Spider-Man set for release on the PS4. But back in 2003, another of New York’s heroes was set to make his video game debut – unfortunately it never saw the light of day.
A video from the YouTube page DidYouKnowGaming? has uncovered details of a cancelled game focusing on Daredevil. The third person (Because let’s be honest, it would be hard to make a first person game with a blind character) game was set to deal with the title character attempting to keep various crime lords from taking control of Hell’s Kitchen in the wake of The Kingpins assassination. With the impending release of the Fox film starring Ben Affleck, it was later expanded to become an open world game, something which was later utilized to great effect in the Spider-Man 2 video game tie-in.
Unfortunately, the development fell apart when Marvel, who had full creative control over the property started to disagree with some of the choices being made. One of the features that Sony wanted to include was a grinding system, akin to the popular Tony Hawk games, which would have seen Daredevil sliding over cables and wires. The video states that XBox manufacturers Microsoft were taking a much more laid back approach.
It was these disputes, coupled with technical difficulties with the games engine that eventually saw the project scrapped. If next years Spider-Man game is successful, we may start seeing more characters given the video game treatment including The Man without Fear. Jay Ong, Marvel’s vice president of games did reveal that The game ‘is just the beginning for Marvel’s ambitious plan to bring its superheroes to consoles.’
