With Captain America: Civil War behind us, we now look forward to the next two movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Doctor Strange will be later this year on November 4th. Then next year will kick things up and start the MCU’s three-movies-a-year schedule. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be the first of those three, blasting into theaters May 5th. And while we will start to enjoy three helpings from the MCU each year, it is rumored that Phase 4 will give us four a year.
Not much is whispered on the Doctor Strange front. We don’t even have a main antagonist yet. They say that Mad Mikkelsen (Dr. Lecter in the Hannibal TV show) will be the villain. But short of rumors and speculations, there’s no word on who he’ll play. We reported on the rumor that Mephisto will be villian for The Defenders. But the demon could very well show up to battle Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme.
“Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe,” says an updated plot for the flick.
As far as GOTG2 goes, a official synopsis has been released:
“Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.”
“Old foes become new allies,” it says. I wonder who that might be. Ronan was killed at the end of part one. But the Kree have been known to clone their warriors. Ronan has allied himself with the Guardians a time or two. But that could also mean Nebula, a stooge to Ronan, and Gamora’s adoptive sister. Or perhaps Yondu will be a little nicer this go ’round.
“Fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid.” This is also raises some questions. Of course, Howard the Duck and Cosmo both made cameo appearances. And somewhere in the internet, I did hear that there was a scene with Howard shot for this one. This could also mean Mantis, as she has been announced to be played by Pom Klementieff.
Also, Kurt Russel’s role is still a mystery. He should be playing Star-Lord’s father. But director James Gunn said he won’t be his dad from the comics: J’Son. There was rumor that he would be Adam Warlock. But IMDB does list Aaron Schwartz as “Young J’Son,” who does look a little like a young Kurt Russel.
And we can’t forget that Nathan Fillion will be playing Simon Williams. Chances are, he’ll just be that cameo on the faux movie posters that were teased. But of course, fanboys are crossing their fingers that we’ll see Fillion put on the Wonder Man duds.
