As maybe every ’90’s kid, I miss the Muppet Turtles. The CGI mess they have now just ain’t cutting it, dude. It’s too distracting. If I were to do a reboot, I’d go back to that style. Maybe not Jim Henson Muppets again, but perhaps a CGI that resembles them.
Many groaned when a third Spider-Man reboot was announced. But they rejoiced when they watched Tom Holland in Captain America: Civil War. I enjoyed Amazing Spider-Man 2 way more than 1. Regardless, they scrapped Andrew Garfield’s run, and wiped the slate clean.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (*breath* that was mouthful) was a tad better than its first. There were elements I enjoyed. But really, I start to think about how I would do a far faithful reboot.
City at War
The first installment would be an adaptation of City At War. The popular arc in the original Mirage Studios run threw the Turtles in the middle of a gang war. The Purple Dragons and the Foot Clan fought for reign over New York City.
To make the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles work, they gotta be the right mix of grit and camp. Kick-Ass had the right idea. But our heroes are going to, and always will, appeal to kids. The ’90’s movies got it. City At War is a fairly dark story. Especially the scenes where the Rat King had Splinter kidnapped and made him eat rats to stay alive. Therefore, a direct adaption would be reserved for maybe a hard PG-13 animated movie like DC likes to do.
This movie would have the Turtles, along with Casey and April’s help, navigate through the belly of the city, fighting all sorts of cannon fodder and supervillains. It would have the feel of those old side-scrolling arcade games for the Nintendo and Super Nintendo.
Casey Jones vs the Purple Dragons
The hockey-masked vigilante had a history with the Purple Dragons. Stephen Amell’s character had a personal vendetta against Bebop and Rocksteady. Perhaps in this, he could have a personal vendetta against Hun, the boss of the Purple Dragons. Hun would rival Shredder, the leader of the Foot Clan.
I was rather fond of the idea that Arrow was playing Casey Jones. It was evident, though, that the only quality used of Casey’s was his optimism. Casey is a spawn of the street. Such bleeds through his personality, skills, and attitude. To see him take on the Purple Dragons would showcase this aspect well.
Shredder’s Pawns
Who was that chick who barely said anything, yet tagged along Eric Sacks in the first, and Shredder in the second? Though they were two different actresses, they both played Karai, Shredder’s daughter, and heir to the Foot Clan. In the comics and cartoons, Karai side-swaps, playing both the Turtles and her father.
Like in Out of the Shadows, Karai and Baxter Stockman would play henchmen to Shredder. Stockman turned himself into a cyborg in the original comics. But in the original cartoon, Shredder mutates him into a fly. Both the IDW comics and the Nickelodeon cartoon use the cyborg and fly personas. In this movie, I’d have him a cyborg, yet the tech would make him look like a fly.
Bebop and Rocksteady were about the only things that were on point in Out of the Shadows. Though, I would give Shredder just one mutant, since he already has two henchmen. And the Turtles would be fighting other villains already. There’s a plethora others he could choose from. Remember, Secret of the Ooze had Rahzar and Tokka. There’s Spike, an evil snapping turtle. But I would give him Leatherhead. In which, you would learn about the pre-ooze history between the alligator and the Turtles. Also, this would tease the Utroms for a sequel, as they had a huge….er, tentacle…….in Leatherhead’s mutation.
Yoshi and Saki
Like in the original movie, which follows the initial Mirage issues rather well, Shredder would have Splinter kidnapped. While fighting through the turf war, the Turtles would ultimately try to get their way to Shredder, to save their father. While Shredder has Splinter chained up, they reminisce about their history as Hamato Yoshi and Oroko Saki.
Showdown at the Technodrome
Once they make their way through the city, past Leatherhead, Hun, and Karai, they are teleported to Dimension X. There, they find the Technodrome. Inside, they fight Stockman’s mousers, until they find the cyborg fly himself.
After Baxter, they make their way to Shredder and Splinter. They somehow free their sensei, as Splinter joins the fight. There, they fight both Shredder and Krang. But at the last minute, they are teleported out of there via a beam down the middle of the room. Here is a “….to be continued,” but maybe a post-credits scene would show them in space. Or, like Thanos in The Avengers, a Triceraton would show his face.
