You don’t have to be an avid comic book reader to know who Stan Lee is. All you have to do is turn on any Marvel movie, and you’re bound to see his face show up somewhere. With all the Marvel movies over the years, his face has really been around.
At the Denver Comic Con this year, the godfather of Marvel was asked his favorite cameo. It was rather a shock, yet with much enthusiasm, to hear his answer.
“Gee, that’s a hard one. I got a big kick out of Mallrats.”
His answer was met with a quite generous applause.
“But it wasn’t a cameo; I really had a role in the movie. Funny thing about that: in the movie, I’m talking to the boy who was the lead, who was very unhappy because he was having trouble with his girlfriend, and I mentioned to him, ‘I remember I once had a girlfriend and I lost her but I’ve never forgotten her, and I think about her all the time,’ something like that. Now, I went home, and my wife said to me, ‘Now what is this about that girlfriend?’ And I learned you have to be very careful about how you explain movies to your wife.”
Such scene features a young Jason Lee, before he went on to Alvin and the Chipmunks and My Name is Earl. Jason’s character, Brodie, asked Stan questions he always wanted to ask his hero; like if The Thing’s thing was also rock.
After Mallrats, he and writer/director Kevin Smith became good friends; still tight to this day.
Check out Mutants, Monsters, and Marvels (an interview between the two), and Stan’s visit to Smith’s podcast, Fatman on Batman.
Back when Smith was announcing the returning cast for Mallrats, via social media, Stan “The Man” was among those announced. Now, the sequel, reportedly called Mallbrats, will be a TV show. If the cameo king says he had an actual role in the first, then he’d certainly get a kick out of reprising that role for multiple episodes.
