Outside of Chimichangas and killing, Deadpool’s other main love is for Golden Girls star, Bea Arthur, and star Ryan Reynolds went to great lengths to make sure that this character trait made it into his big screen debut.
With the recent release of Deadpool on home media, many interesting tidbits have been found from the film’s audio commentary with star, Ryan Reynolds. One of these tidbits found by Empire magazine, is that that Production spent $10,000 dollars in order to secure Arthur’s likeness for the shirt he wears in his pre-Deadpool scenes. Speaking on the commentary track he revealed:
“As a producer, I had to approve that $10,000. [But], you can’t have a Deadpool movie without Bea Arthur.”
While this may seem like a large expense for such a small joke, it turns out the money spent actually went to a good cause as the terms for using the Maude actresses likeness was that the money went to a charity of the family’s choosing. Website Cinemablend speculates this to be the Ali Forney Center a charity which provides housing homeless LGBTQ youth.
Arthur has been a firm favorite of the character for much of his comic history, with him often referring to her as the sexiest woman alive. It’s good to see that Fox were able to both on the characters love for the character and the late actress herself. It’s just a shame that we won’t be able to see the Merc with a Mouth meet his idol on the screen.
Deadpool is available to own on DVD and Blu-Ray now.
