You could be forgiven for not having heard of Scott Adkins, but the chances are you’ve probably already seen him on screen, and might not even realize it. Heralding from the West Midlands over in the UK, the fighter-turned-actor already has an impressive CV of work under his belt, and has gone on to notch up big budget appearances in ‘Zero Dark Thirty’, ‘The Expendables 2’ ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ and more recently ‘Grimsby’. The imposing Midlander also famously screen-tested for the role of Batman, losing out to fellow Brit actor Christian Bale, but it’s his role as another superhero that he’s more notoriously known for.
You might not want to cast your mind back to the mess that was ‘Wolverine: Origins’, but that’s what I’m asking you to do. Remember the big fight scene right at the end between Logan and a ‘Weapon X’ modified Wade Wilson? It was a prosthetic-laden Adkins that filled in for Ryan Reynolds, kicking the shit out of Hugh Jackman before abruptly losing his head. So to speak.
In a recent interview for his latest movie ‘Criminal’, Adkins was nothing but apologetic for his role in delaying Wade Wilson’s eventual solo movie:
“I was part of the problem. I was part of the abomination of that character.” He stated, adding “I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you and everybody else that it wasn’t my idea. I was doing what I was told by 20th Century Fox!”
When asked directly about his involvement in Doc Strange, Adkins remained tight-lipped, but did pass comment on the tone of the project:
“What’s great about Marvel is they don’t just make superhero movies. They make a different genre out of a different superhero film. Whether it’s a thriller, a straight-up action movie or political thriller, they’re likely to choose a different genre for different heroes, and we’re gonna see some psychedelic stuff in this one. Very exciting. This is going to show that other dimension side. I’m sure Scott Derrickson’s going to bring some of his horror element into it as well.”
Personally, given Adkins legendary status as a martial artist, I’m hoping that his role will give him the opportunity for recurring villain appearances in the MCU, but that may be wishful thinking. Pre-buzz for ‘Civil War’ seemed to be setting frank Grillo’s ‘Crossbones’ up as a recurring villain, and look how that turned out.
When we know what’s going on with ‘Doc Strange’, you will, so stay posted!
