One of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s most popular roles lies in the 1987 film Predator, which is set to be rebooted as The Predator; a new sequel being prepared for a 2018 release. And, naturally, many fans wondered whether or not Schwarzenegger would reprise his role as Dutch for the new movie. And although it’s still not known whether or not he’ll return, we at least know he won’t return as the main character.
An interview with Shane Black and Empire revealed that a new character will lead this upcoming sequel. Shane Black is the co-writer and director for The Predator, as well as a co-writer and actor from the original film, and managed to say one thing about the new movie’s main character:
“The hero of the new one, the name I’ve given the guy in Predator right now is Quinn Mackenna. And that may change.”
It’s definitely a cool name, and I can’t help but get a Jaws vibe from it. Quinn and Quint sound very alike, and with that said it would be rather interesting to see a character like Quint from Jaws have a part in a Predator movie. An aged and grizzled captain with a hint of PTSD? Sounds like a good idea to me.
And Shane Black seems to be having his own good ideas, as he wants The Predator to be more of an event film and meet the standards set by the original 1987 film, which every sequel after has seemed to ignore in favor of a smaller budget and story. Don’t believe me? Check out an interview where Shane Black spoke with IGN about his inspiration for the film:
“How can I follow in the footsteps of someone who re-invents and brings that much event-ized quality to a pulp franchise. The worst thing you could hope for in one of these is a shot in bright sunlight of a field and the Predator just kind of walks on and ‘hello’ — you want to do… I keep going back to Ridley Scott, the way he captured the alien in that first movie. The sense of mystery and portent. If we could just cut into a little piece of that — that sort of vibe — and then I think there’s humor to be had too. And tonal shifting.”
Story details have been kept under wraps, although that’s to be expected as the film doesn’t hit theaters until February 9, 2018.
