Lots of trailers to get to in this week’s trailer roundup:
Collide
Haven’t had enough of Nicholas Hoult? Well, Open Road Films has got the fix for you. Collide follows him as he does whatever he can to save the life of his ill girlfriend played by Felicity Jones. Hoult must return to the criminal underworld he left behind a long time ago in order to find quick cash for Jones’ treatment. But when Hoult crosses the path of a dangerous gangster, played by Sir Anthony Hopkins, Jones is now put in danger and it’s Hoult’s mission to save her.
The film gives off that vibe like the Transporter films and other “race against the clock types”. Ben Kingsley adds a bit of charisma onto the comedy in this one as well. Maybe Hoult is trying his hand in the leading man action genre. We’ll just have to see if the audience will bite. -Mark Salcido
Monster Trucks
What do you get when you combine monsters and trucks? Well, a monster truck, of course. Literally. The trailer is fun and fast-paced. The monster is only fearsome in size, but by all accounts, looks fun and behaves like anyone’s rowdy best friend. Tripp (Till) won the jackpot in making friends with this beast, and does whatever he can to keep him safe while he benefits from the monster’s love of speed. He hides under the hood of the truck and acts as its engine; perfect for a teenager low on cash and looking to make an impression. This clip has made an impression on me for sure. -Kelsey Mejiarodarte
THE FUNDAMENTALS OF CARING
Netflix has got themselves another film for their subscribers and they plan on using Paul Rudd to help with pulling the strings on your heart. Rudd’s character has suffered an incredible amount of loss and decides to become a caregiver for Trevor, played by Craig Roberts. Rudd takes Roberts on a cross country trip in hopes to discover what it means to be alive.
Paul Rudd brings the everyday man charm that Rudd is best known for and Roberts adds on that British dry humor that seems to mix well. Selena Gomez as Roberts love interest is there to bring the spark into Robert’s life but hopefully is there to add something different than that type of typical role. Hopefully this won’t fly too far under the radar. -Mark Salcido
The Little Prince
I honestly have no idea where to start with this one. It isn’t often that I see a trailer to a children’s movie and become completely enamored with it before I even get to see it in full. Yes, I will make sure I see this in theater with my kids. Whether you have kids or not, you should, too.
I guess I’ll start with the fact that this movie has a big celebrity lineup. Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, Benicio del Toro, Paul Rudd, James Franco, Ricky Gervais, and Paul Giamatti all have a part in this film. Add to that the well known director, Mark Osborne, who also co-directed Kung Fu Panda. If that isn’t enough, it also has not one, but two types of animation. Stop motion animation is used for the story of the little prince that lives on a tiny planet in need of a friend, while computer animation is used for the little girl’s reality. It was released in France in July of 2015 and was picked up by Netflix. It will be released August 5th in the U.S and already has a 94% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Go feed your inner child with this imaginative and magical film. -Kelsey Mejiarodarte
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition
Seriously, where the fuck was this trailer when we needed it? If you’ve seen the Batman V. Superman movie, then you already know the story. But this trailer should be noticed because it’s the R-Rated version that WB decided to release on Blu-Ray/DVD. And frankly, it looks way better than what we got.
There are plenty of scenes that were not added to the final cut and give us a better in-depth look into the story. Hopefully they can fill in many of the plot holes that were so problematic in the theatrical release. Sure there are bits of Doomsday in this one as well, but it’s not like WB didn’t spoil that for the audience before the film was even released. Will this make the Batman V. Superman film that we wanted? We’ll find out when the Ultimate Edition is released. -Mark Salcido
Marauders
We’ve all seen the type of films involving corruption in the banks and the aftermath of what happens when a group of people with convictions bring all of that evil to light. This film has that, but there seems to be more to the story. The added idea that it is about more than just money, and the award-winning cast, makes this film seem to be of a higher caliber than the other mold-fitting films of the same genre.
The clip shows Jeffrey Hubert (Willis) at the top of a financial institution, while Agent Jonathan Montgomery (Meloni), Stockwell (Bautista), and Wells (Grenier) try to sort out what’s what. I will say that enough is given to draw in the audience without giving too much away. I honestly couldn’t tell if Hubert is on the wrong side of the law, or if he was manipulating the game to benefit a cause. I will find out for sure once this is released. -Kelsey Mejiarodarte
