Captain America is a character who has gone through a lot of changes over his 75 year career, he’s been a World War Two icon, a present day hero, a fugitive and most recently he was transformed into a ninety year old man. But it’s his most recent change which has caused the biggest stir amongst fans.
The recent Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 has introduced the controversial twist that Steve Rogers, the living embodiment of the American way, is in fact a sleeper agent for the terrorist organisation Hydra and has been all along. While many of you maybe telling yourself that it’s a clone or robotic duplicate, Tom Brevoort and writer Nick Spencer have confirmed that this in fact the real Steve and that this revelation has been in the works for 16 months now. Brevoort explained some of the reasoning behind this decision, telling TIME:
“There should be a feeling of horror or unsettledness at the idea that somebody like this can secretly be part of this organization,’ before adding ‘There are perfectly normal people in the world who you would interact with on a professional level or personal level, and they seem like the salt of the earth but then it turns out they have some horrible secret — whether it’s that they don’t like a certain group of people or have bodies buried in their basement.”
This has unsurprisingly come as a shock to most fans, many of whom hold him as the ideal that people should strive to, whilst others see it as a slap in the face of a character who was created as a response to a growing threat of hatred. Hopefully this will all be explained soon, and we can see a return of the Sentinel of Liberty.
It’s not just fans who are disappointed by this revelation, word has also spread to Captain America: Civil War actor Chris Evans who took to Twitter to reveal his thoughts on the matter.

But all is not lost, we still have a Captain America who supports the red, white and blue in the form of former Falcon, Sam Wilson, who in 2014 became the latest person to take on the mantle. Let’s just hope he doesn’t turn out to be a Skrull or something. Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 is on sale now.
