Empire Podcast organized a Q&A session with director Shane Black for his new film “The Nice Guys”. With exchanges with producer Joel Silver, Black got into some detail regarding the upcoming Predator film he’s taken on, entitled “The Predator”, taking the tone to a more “inventive sequel”:
“It’s an attempt to ‘event-ise’ the Predator again. Make it more mysterious. The Predator has been so overdone. Every couple years, there’s a knock-off churned out. Very low budget with a guaranteed return.”
The sister franchise alongside Alien, Predator has come across as a cult classic with its debut in 1987. Since then, its popularity in the film series and pop culture trend has grown tremendously, even making an appearance in the latest Mortal Kombat X game and, well, a crossover with Archie.
While keeping the cards close to his chest, Black did go into detail about what kind of impact he hopes to invision:
“…the same sense of wonderment and newness that Close Encounters had when that came out. That’s what we want. It’s very impossible. But we’re gonna try. It doesn’t have to be 50 Predators riding motorcycles. It just has to feel like a powerful story that has a lot of flavours and textures.”
And one more slip came when the name of the main character was revealed:
“The hero of the film, the name I’ve given the guy, is Quinn McKenna.”
Granted, the film is in very early stages of development, with no casting announcements even discussed yet. Original star Arnold Schwarzenegger mentioned he’d be open to returning as Dutch. Who knows what else can be possible.
The Predator is scheduled to be released March 2, 2018.
