There’s been talk that the next X-Men movie will be a mulligan of the Phoenix Saga that X-Men 3: The Last Stand failed at. Recently, we were told that it will take place in the ’90’s, as the prequel movies have jumped a decade with each installment. This month’s X-Men: Apocalypse will take place in the ’80’s, like Days of Future Past teetered between the ’70’s and 2020’s, and First Class was in the ’60’s.
“That was something Simon [Kinberg] and I discussed a long time ago, all the way back to when I first pitched the studio on First Class — that they do each movie in 10-year increments….” director, Bryan Singer told Fandango. “It’s a nice way for the audience to kind of keep track of the timeline, and it’s fun to play in these different eras. So that’s a good starting point.”
In Apocalypse, the prequels have made their selves around to meet up with the X-Men we met in the first movie in 2000. In such, Jean Grey was played by Famke Janssen. We last saw her reprise her role in the “fixed” ending of Days of Future Past. She also played an important role in The Wolverine. As these prequel movies have called for younger actors, Jean was recast with Sophie Turner from Game of Thrones.
If the Phoenix Saga and Dark Phoenix Saga are to be done right, then they should receive a visit from the Shi’Ar, an alien race with ties with the Phoenix Force. And it sounds like Singer, indeed, wants to take the X-Men to the stars.
But we’ve also introduced the tenants of time travel, which already exists in the comic book. Also I imagine – and this is the first time I’ve actually answered the question this way – but another thing that’s been introduced in the comics is a big alien, interstellar tenant within the X-Men universe that hasn’t been explored. And to me, that might be kind of fun because I’m a huge Star Wars and Star Trek fan, and exploring the X-Men universe and being able to utilize that would be exciting, visually.”
X-Men: Apocalypse was reported to be Singer’s last X-movie. This was also reported to be the last X-movie, period, whereas the franchise was to embark on spin-offs, like New Mutants, the last Wolverine, and the Deadpool franchise. While nothing is set in stone, yet, and bad reviews on Apocalypse are starting to circle, this is all still talk. But since the Phoenix storyline that Singer laid the groundwork for with the first movies was massacred by Brett Ratner, I sure hope he’ll use this chance wisely.
Apocalypse will surely rule the box office when he arrives May 27th. Be there.
