Captain America: Civil War is out in theaters with a booming attendance and a very energized reception, scoring an astounding 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. For those wanting to have their Marvel knowledge put to the test, we have 10 Easter Eggs, thanks to ComicBook.com.
For those that haven’t seen the film yet, a spoiler warning. Let’s get started:
1.Bucky Barnes imprisoned in holding cell “Gate D 23”
D23 is, in fact, the official Walt Disney Company fan club, founded in 2009, and known for their convention, The D23 Expo, which is celebrated every other year in Anaheim, California.
2. Homecoming
During HYDRA’s brainwashing of Bucky earlier in the film, the agents used certain words that had Bucky controlled, with random ones as “freight car” and “benign”. One of the last ones mentioned was “homecoming”.
“Homecoming” may very well be making reference to the upcoming Marvel/Sony Spider-man film, appropriately titled “Spider-man: Homecoming”.
3. Star Wars
When facing Scott Lang as the newfound Giant-Man, Team Stark was in need of ideas to have him tumble. Spidey himself mentioned an idea where he would constrict his feet with webbing while Iron Man and War Machine would knock him right down. An idea he got seeing the “Snow planet of Hoth” and from a “really old movie, Empire Strikes Back”.
No question where this one came from, especially with Disney now owning both Star Wars and Marvel, it feels more than fitting.
4. “You Strapped In?”
The infamous Ant-Man and Hawkeye combo move has been inspired by an old but well-known Avengers issue cover, specifically The Avengers #223.
Even before, the very move was actually used in the animated “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes”.
5. Dead Director
A scene depicting a deceased man in a bath tub was something out of Marvel’s usual comfort zone. The deceased man was actually Joe Russo, one of the directing brothers of the very film.
6. Stan Lee
You knew this was coming and we’re answering the question.
Yes, Stan Lee’s cameo this time was the FedEx delivery man, during the scene with Rhodey’s recovery. And to come with it, a quipped “Tony Stank” gives fans of Team Cap something to laugh with.
7. Thanos
Thanos was actually in the film….sort of.
Though we now know Josh Brolin for the role of the tyrant, his first on-screen appearance was at the post-credits scene of The Avengers, who was played by Damion Poitier with no speaking lines. Poitier came back to cameo as one of the thugs ganged with Crossbones.
8. The Dean
Community fans will be happy to know “The Dean” is pretty much in the film. Jim Rash appears in the film as an M.I.T. with a character very similar to his TV counterpart.
Unfortunately, no Greendale means no Jeff for him.
9. Spider-Signal
A post-credits scene with Tom Holland as Peter Parker was obviously setting up for the 2017 “Spider-man: Homecoming”, but Stark seems to have given some of his tech to use for a “Spider-Signal”.
Before anyone makes assumptions of this being a Batman copy or joke, this is actually alluding to an actual device from the 60’s animated Spider-man series
10. Triple Easter Egg
This one is a triple essentially. Civil War was fairly isolated from its original source material, with only core ideas and characters really used, but some iconic scenes did make through for some key moments in the actual film.
Our first notable mention is Miriam Sharpe in the film, a woman who Tony Stark encounters who has gone through the horrible fortune of losing her son from the actions of heroes, anger clouding her interaction with him. The comics feature more into her, with Stark attending her son’s funeral and even going as far as to spit at the face of the Iron Man. A truly deep moment in the comics, a small notion to the film’s credit for giving a subtle nod to the event of tragedy.
The second one is during Peggy Carter’s funeral, where her niece and Roger’s new girlfriend Sharon spoke through a eulogy prepared. She does actually bring up a certain dialogue from the Civil War comics (Amazing Spider-man #537).
Finally, the climactic battle with Cap and Stark relived an infamous shot from the comics, of Captain America’s shield held against the beams of Iron Man. Truly a poetic fantasy in the eyes of any Marvel fan.
