For the last several weeks, fans have been discussing the pros and cons of casting Daisy Ridley as Lara Croft. Some believed she was perfect for the role, while others saw her as too inexperienced. Others thought she would simply be too busy with episodes 8 and 9 of Star Wars.
Unfortunately for those in favor of Ridley’s casting, those points are now moot. Alicia Vikander was officially announced today as the new Lara in Warner Bros’ upcoming reboot.
Best known for her award-nominated roles in Ex-Machina, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and her Oscar-winning turn in The Danish Girl, Vikander is obviously a talented actress – and about 2.5 seconds on Google will tell you she’s gorgeous.
The biggest surprise about this announcement, in my opinion, is that a British actress wasn’t chosen. One would have thought that the backlash against Angelina Jolie (also beautiful and talented) and her badly faked posh English accent would have been enough reason to go with a lady from the UK this time around. In addition to Daisy Ridley, other fan suggestions included Lauren Cohan, Camilla Luddington, and Gemma Arterton. While any one of them could have easily carried the potential franchise, it is now in Vikander’s capable hands.
