With the critical and commercial success of Deadpool, it was inevitable that talks of a sequel would run rampant across the internet. Many speculations on potential storylines, who may play Cable and possible cameos have all bombarded message boards across the world wide web although there’s one character on everybody’s fingertips who many deem perfect to team up with Deadpool in his next adventure … Yeah you guessed it, Spider-Man.
With his inclusion into Captain America: Civil War, thanks to a bit of shrewd business with Sony, Spider-Man is now officially a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, many fans still cling onto the hope that he maybe able to jump universes yet again and join Deadpool in his next outing.
Unfortunately, Tim Miller has stated that the studios will probably not allow that to happen any time soon.
Speaking with CBR, Producer Simon Kinberg had this to say:
“Tim and I talked about it quite a bit. We grew up on comics that did it all the time, quite freely. Not just within the Marvel Universe, but outside the Marvel Universe. So it’d be rad to see it. Those decisions are made by people at a much higher part of the food chain than Tim and I — we just go execute it…we certainly each have a really good relationship with Kevin Feige. Maybe one day there’s a sit-down, ‘Godfather’-style dinner where we could broker a deal. It’d be cool.”
Although it looks unlikely for now, many would have scoffed at the prospect of Sony allowing Marvel one of their prized possessions to join their Cinematic Universe and yet here we are. With rumors flying round about the Fantastic Four’s status, in a couple of years time I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re able to acquire the rights to more characters.
As for now, I’d say enjoy what you have. Fox have finally been able to deliver a solid crowd-pleaser that not only broke records but also changed the way studio’s view comic book properties. If you keep to the source material and respect the heritage then you’ll be rewarded.
