While DC already has their first female led superhero movie set for next year with Wonder Woman, Marvel has yet to find a director or lead actress for its own attempt, Captain Marvel – although it certainly sounds like they are getting close.
During last week’s Meet the Movie Press, Jeff Schneider hinted that an official announcement could be around the corner and even dropped a cryptic clue as to the Actor/Director combo may be. Schneider revealed:
“There was a rumour about an actress being up for it; an already existing rumour, that’s not new. I’ve definitely heard there’s some truth to that rumour, and that there’s a director with the same first name who has also been eyed. I don’t think that [an announcement] is too far off. If they can make it to Comic Con, they will.”
The most prominent name thrown around the rumor mill is of course Emily Blunt although other names which frequently come up are Charlize Theron, Rebecca Furguson and Brie Larson. Going on the assumption that the director and actress will share the same first name, this doesn’t give a large number of options. The website comicbookmovie.com speculates that if the actress is in fact Emily Blunt, the directors could possibly be Emily Carmichael who recently had films screened in competition at various festivals, Emily Young (Veronika Decides to Die), Emily Ting (Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong) or Emily Hagin (Pathogen). They do iterate that it is purely speculation on their part.
This information should be taken with a grain of salt of course, but we should hopefully get an official confirmation in the coming months. Captain Marvel flys onto our screens March 8th, 2019.
