With the third Captain America making headlines of topics like heroes fighting heroes, more character appearances and “Underoos”, it all comes down to the central character in the film, Cap himself, and his fearless spirit of doing what is right and just.
Chris Evans, star of the film, spoke on that matter on Jimmy Kimmel Live in a personal level, about his initial nervousness of approaching the role back all those years ago. He opened up about what anyone would feel intimidated by in Hollywood multiple-picture deals: contracts.
“Yeah yeah, I was scared, because at first it was a matter, at first it was some 9 picture contract, and there are parts of me that have a little bit of social anxiety with this industry and doing movies one at a time, if all the sudden you decide you don’t want to do them anymore, you’re afforded the opportunity to take a step back and recalibrate. When you have a giant contract, if all the sudden you’re not responding well, too bad, you’ve got to suit up again, and that was scary. “
It’s understandable that a lot of sacrifices are to be taken when part of a comic book film series, especially when unable to make time involving yourself in other film projects. A fear of failure to live up to the expectations of fans is a big thought to take in for reputation and personal thoughts too. However, Evans did start looking at the big picture of things:
“It kept coming back my way. I said no a few times, and it kept coming back, and I talked to a few people in my life, family, and friends, and it just started to kind of make sense that I was saying no out of fear, really, and you can’t do anything out of fear. You can’t be doing something because you’re scared, so it ended up kind of clicking to me in the way of looking at it and saying whatever you’re scared of, push yourself into it.”
At the end of it, Chris Evans has succeeded in his portrayal in many fan’s eyes. Had it not been for Marvel’s stubbornness of offering Evans the role, we could be living in a very different world. Perhaps he channeled the braveness of the character to accepting the role as his first actual action as Cap. The interview snippet can be seen below:
