One of the most anticipated aspects of the upcoming Captain America: Civil War was what everybody’s Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man was going to look like. When he did make his debut however, it caused some debate amongst fans with some praising it and others labeling it a disappointment. Well now, the films directors have spoken about this costume choice.
In an interview with Forbes, one half of the directing team, Joe Russo explained:
“The design of the costume is what it is. That’s the design that we love, it’s the design that Kevin Feige loves and so on. [Spider-Man] is a very popular character so it’s always going to be controversial, people are always going to love or hate what you do with him, but all we can do is make sure that we love it, that we are true to ourselves and true to how we feel about the character and then hope that everybody else digs it.”
His brother, Anthony Russo also explains how the trailer was only a small glimpse of what the wall-crawler will bring to the table. He told the site:
“We gave such a small impression of the character in that trailer, it’s something of a Rorschach test where people can pour as much of their Spidey anxieties out but when they see the movie they are going to get a very big picture of a very complete character that they have never seen before.”
They also went on to reassure the fans who were disappointed in the characters appearance that they may change their mind when the film hits screens May 6th with Anthony explaining:
“It’s kind of hard to react to people’s reactions but they will change radically when they see the movie.”
While his brother, Joe added:
“And there is still effects work that needs to be done on [the Spider-Man suit].”
We’ll see more than a few brief seconds when the film is released in May, where fans can gain a better idea of the character.
