With all the success that the Deadpool film received earlier this year, it’s easy to forget that this isn’t the first time that the Merc with the mouth has graced our screens although those that do remember would probably like to forget including Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds. One person who hasn’t forgotten is X-Men Origins: Wolverine director Gavin Hood, who has some interesting words to say about about this years superhero film.
Speaking to Cinemablend, Hood was asked for his thoughts on Fox’s latest to which he responded:
‘You know, when he [Reynolds] did the little cameo bit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine,’ before adding ‘it was the studio atttempting to plug in a few characters and test the waters. But now he gets to make his own movie and he did it with great courage and with the full force of his personality, so he deserves every success.’
The Enders Game director then went on to reveal why he believed the film was able to be the success it became. He told the site:
‘They had to make it R rated, but can you imagine if they were trying for PG-13? I just don’t think it would have worked. Which is not to say that other films shouldn’t be PG-13. Of course you want that huge audience. But you’ve got to be very careful that you’re not torturing the material to fit a particular marketing strategy, and that’s what they didn’t do with Deadpool.’
It certainly sounds as though he has no hard feelings in regards to the character and certainly knows where the 2009 version went wrong. We’ll be seeing the real version of the character again when the previously announced Deadpool sequel hits our screens and the X-Men Origins: Wolverine as the butt of more jokes in the same film.
