If you had to describe Clerks director Kevin Smith it would have to be Fanboy, if it was two words it would be Batman Fanboy. Knowing this and his friendship with Ben Affleck, you would have thought Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice would be right up the directors street, but it sounds as though you thought wrong.
On the recent episode of his podcast, Hollywood Babble-On, Smith discussed the Man of Steel sequel with co-host Ralph Garman. During their dissection of the film, Smith explained what he saw as the films biggest flaw – It’s lack of heart. He revealed:
‘Remember before when we were talking about Flash, and that it has heart, humor, and spectacle. The movie I felt like didn’t really have a heart. It was certainly f****** humorless, there was nothing funny going on in that world whatsoever, but it had lots of spectacle. Like you can’t take that away from Snyder. Boy, he knows how to like compose a frame and how to setup a shot. Beautiful visual stylist but you need more than just the pictures, you need like characterization and these characters seemed off character, particularly Superman.’
But what about Smith’s old Chasing Amy star Ben Affleck’s take on The Dark Knight, how did he stack up? The answer – not good. While the pair don’t seem to have an issue with Affleck’s acting, they do seem to feel that the characterization was off.
Garman: He just wasn’t that bright.
Smith: Certainly not the world’s greatest detective! More like Bat-Trump.
Garman: He was Bat-Trump. A rich guy with a bad attitude. Who really hated immigrants.
Smith: He hates immigrants in a big bad way!
Garman: I’m gonna build a wall around Krypton, and I’m gonna make them pay for it. I’m going to build a wall around the Hall of Justice, it’s what I do. I build walls and they’re huge.”
