After years of asking, fans were finally able to see The Punisher enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the premiere of Daredevil Season 2, played by non other than Jon Bernthal.
The actor went through a lot to get into the mindset for the character and portray him correctly, and had this to say about the experience in an interview with ABC News:
“There’s no way I could even begin to tackle this role if I wasn’t a father and a husband in my mind. You realize what it’s like to love somebody more than yourself and be willing to give up your life for them in a heartbeat.”
So, just like how Frank Castle uses his love for his family to find the energy to punish, Bernthal seemed to do the same to bring power to his role as The Punisher. How strangely poetic.
Bernthal also discussed the character in more depth:
“They are sort of introducing this very adversarial relationship and they come to blows in every which way,” he said. “As the season develops, one of the key themes is ‘What does it take to be a hero? What is a hero?’ As different as these guys are, I think there’s a real respect and admiration that grows between them.”
It’ll definitely be interesting to see, as fans have been waiting for the character to return since 2008’s Punisher: War Zone.
