In an obvious move to capitalize off of the recent success of Deadpool, Sony is bringing back the Venom solo film that was in development hell (or cancelled?) and moving forward with it. Here’s more from the THR report:
Sony has tapped Dante Harper to pen a script for Venom, something that is being envisioned as a franchise apart from and unrelated to the upcoming Spider-Man movie in the works with actor Tom Holland.
Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, stewards of the Spider-Man properties, are producing and overseeing the project.
So, this will be a stand alone franchise as it’s planned out right now and not related to the Tom Holland Spider-Man. That could obviously change down the road but I’m willing to bet that Sony is going to make this an R-rated film – as they should.
No word yet on if they’ll be bringing in Carnage – as they did at one point have a film titled Venom Carnage planned but scrapped that once they made the deal with Marvel Studios. If Carnage is brought on board, it will almost certainly be rated-R.
It also hasn’t been said if we’ll be getting the villain version of Venom or the anti-hero version, but if they were to add Carnage to the mix – I’d say anti-hero.
The last time we saw the character was when he was played by Topher Grace in Spider-Man 3 and that was – forgettable at best. And even that might be too high of praise.
