Some obscure little indie film no one has heard of shattered a lot of box office records this weekend. Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened to a record $238 million breaking the previous record set by Jurassic World all the way back in –well… June. Many experts are predicting this one will pass Avatar’s final gross of $760 million. With no significant competition coming for Star Wars in the typically week months of January and February, I see no reason to think otherwise. After only three days, this is already the 107th highest grossing film of all time.
One slot and $224 million below, we find Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip. The fourth installment in the critically acclaimed franchise based on screeching rodent performing terrible pop songs grossed a franchise low of $14.4 million. I don’t know a single kid who isn’t seeing/hasn’t seen The Force Awakens so I’m not sure what the geniuses at Fox were thinking when they chose this release date.
The Tina Fey/Amy Poehler comedy Sisters opened in third with $13.4 million. This thing has a $30 million dollar budget on it so this opening is pretty decent considering the fact that audiences have a lot more free time to go see movies during the holiday season. Unlike Road Chip, the R rated film Sisters has a different enough target audience to be solid counter-programming during the reign of Star Wars.
That’s it for me! Does The Force Awakens have what it takes to become the highest grossing film of all time? What movie will be the first to take away to number one position from it for a weekend? Comment away!
