Even though Gareth Edwards brought us Godzilla just last year in the grandest of fashions, the original Japanese studio Toho is rebooting the franchise in their own way after over a decade of silence.
Toho’s last movie in the series, 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars, was celebrated as a finale to the series, but it was clear by the end that the series no longer had the cultural impact that made the original movies so memorable, so they decided to end it there and take a long hiatus. Well, that hiatus is finally over, and two years ahead of Hollywood’s Godzilla 2, we’re going to be getting Godzilla: Resurgence.
While that title makes it sound like a bad video game sequel, Toho isn’t messing around with this new movie. Godzilla: Resurgence is co-directed by Hideki Anno, of Gunbuster and Neon Genesis Evangelion fame, as well as Shinji Higuchi, the director of the live-action Attack on Titan movies; Anno wrote the script, while Higuchi focused on the effects, meaning both of their talents were emphasized.
While there isn’t too much known about the movie outside a thirty-second teaser, we do know that Godzilla is going to be at his tallest height yet, and he’s going to be a bonafide villain.
Here’s the poster:

Godzilla: Resurgence releases in theaters in Japan on July 29, 2016. Make sure to contact your local theaters early and often to make sure your theaters get the movie, too, whenever it makes its way stateside.
