While production has already started on Marvel’s Doctor Strange – there was apparently another vision for the film. This one was to be written by Neil Gaiman and directed by Guillermo del Toro.
In a recent Twitter post, Gaiman said that Marvel wasn’t interested in that vision:
“I still wish Marvel had been interested in a [Guillermo del Toro] & me Dr Strange movie, because I wanted to write Clea so badly after 1602.”
This could be exaggerated because here’s what del Toro had to say about the project back in 2012:
“When Neil Gaiman was visiting Hellboy II, he literally said, “Wouldn’t it be cool to do Dr Strange together?” and I said, “Yeah that would be cool.” (laughs) That was the extent of the discussion, and then four or five weeks later it was like “Neil Gaiman and Guillermo Developing Dr. Strange for Marvel,” and Marvel had never heard of that development and neither have I.”
While we might never actually know how close these two were to making a Doctor Strange film, it’s still a pretty interesting thought nonetheless. I feel like that would have been a perfect combination for the film, but as Marvel has shown time and time again – they know what they’re doing.
