Listen up, Dredd-heads. It’s time to put down your fantasy football teams, and set your brains to something far more important.
We want you to select your favorite Dredd character, past or present, and then think of the best person to play them in a potential Film/TV sequel.
We’ll go over the results, and publish a top 10 in due course. Have a look at our suggestions below, and let us know what you think?
10. Judge Hershey – Gina Carano
Perhaps a controversial one to kick off with, but who better to play a young Barbara Hershey than Carano? More than able to hold her own in a fight scene, but as her recent acting debuts have shown, she’s also able to provide a touch of doubt and vulnerability when required, this MMA queen gets our vote.
9. Chief Judge McGruder – Glenn Close
Searching for someone to play McGruder in her slightly more ‘together’ years, you need an older actress who can convey drama and light-heartedness in equal measure. Close’s recent minor role in GOTG proves she’s up to the task.
8. Grice – Scott Adkins
Looking for someone to play the big bad from Inferno? Adkins isn’t only a superbly accomplished fighter, but also excels in roles that require him to dial the rage up to ‘full-on’. He’d be a good fit for Grice in either his pre or post Titan incarceration.
7. Max Normal – Bill Nighy
For Dredd’s number-one informant you need a dapper gent who looks the business in a suit and bowler hat combo. With the exception of Colin Firth, I can’t think of anyone more fitting or droll than Nighy.
6. Chopper – Chris Hemsworth
With his career defining performances as Thor under his belt, this walking advert for all things Australian has come to corner the market when looking for physical, blonde-haired male actors. Well, him and Ryan Gosling. But of the two, it’s Hemsworth I can see competing at Supersurf 10.
5. Rico Dredd – Colin Farrell
Farrell brings the dark and broody to the table just as much as Karl Urban, and is also capable of the harsh and gravelly tones needed to portray a Dredd Clone.
4. Mean Machine Angel – Sean Harris
Harris has become the go-to guy for playing utterly crazy crazies. His recent physical performance in Deliver Us From Evil gives a flavour of just how unhinged he can be, and that drawn, haunted face would be a great fit for Mean Machine. Well, half of it, anyway…
3. Orlok – Iko Uwais
Anybody who’s watched either of The Raid films knows what the Indonesian actor Unwais brings to the table. A breathtakingly good fighter, Unwais would excel as the rageful foreign assassin, cutting a path of destruction through MC1, and heralding Armageddon.
2. Judge Death – Andy Serkis
It would take the undisputed King of motion capture performance to fill the boots of Dredd’s deadliest foe. It’ll be a real challenge, requiring a clever blend of prosthetics and CGI to convincingly bring the Dark Judges to life, and Serkis is the man to lead them in bloody judgement against the people of the Big Meg.
1. Mandroid – Michael Shannon
The role of vengeful former space marine Nate Slaughterhouse is another that requires a conflicted and angry performance; Shannon is easily up to the task. Anyone who’s seen his work on Take Shelter, or Boardwalk Empire will be aware of his ability to convey a tortured and desperate soul.
