Ben Affleck is our new Batman and is here to stay. If early buzz is any indication, this could be very good thing for the core of the DC Universe. Affleck has been getting great reviews from early screenings which is reassuring to comic fans. With a new Batman comes a new take on the Dark Knight, which could be a great thing.
Fans undoubtedly loved the Christopher Nolan version of the Dark Knight as it was both critically and financially successful. Most importantly, it restored the good name of Batman after it was put on life support with Batman and Robin. Hopefully this new Batman adds to the foundation established by Nolan because as fantastic as Nolan’s trilogy was, there is room for improvement when it comes to Batman as a character. Yes, I know that’s almost sacrilegious to say at this point but hear me out.
Nolan’s Batman was one grounded in reality and for the time it was helpful for the character but the Dark Knight is more of a fanciful character – after all, he is a comic book character. He isn’t totally out there but there is always a bit of suspension of disbelief with him. Ranging from pits bringing people back to life, futuristic technology, and being friends with multiple aliens – Batman is not one for a fully grounded in reality movie. Yes, he needs to live in reality more than other characters but not to as great an extent as we got with Nolan. I’m hoping we get a more fanciful version this time around and more well rounded. Batman is many things but we’ve never seen all those facets in one movie. We haven’t really seen the full extent of his martial arts in action as well as his mental ability. He is the world’s greatest detective, so let’s see that in action.
With Affleck behind the cowl comes a new opportunity to see some new sides of Batman, some that only die hard comic fans would know. It gives a new side to the character and presents endless opportunities and stories for Batman. Whether that be Under the Red Hood or some other famous tale, we know have the best chance ever to see those stories unfold before us.
