“Daddy needs to express some rage…”
Well. It’s finally here. After the infamous (and frankly hilarious) leaked test footage on the Internet last year, a shaky festival trailer leaked last month and monday’s comedy monologue teaser, a full and official Deadpool trailer has finally arrived…
Dissected, it’s roughly 5% sentimentality, 35% action and 60% one liners, and would we have it any other way for everybody’s favourite ‘Merc with the mouth’?
We all know Ryan Reynolds is playing Wade Wilson, and fans will be glad to see not only will he be retaining his mask, but his trademarked facial scarring is also present, and quite the talking point.
“Motherfucker, you are hard to look at….. Like a testicle with teeth… You look like Freddie Kruger face f*cked a topographical map of Utah…”
But just who the hell is everybody else in the trailer?
6. Copycat (Monica Baccarin)
Gotham and Homeland’s super-sexy Baccarin is playing Vanessa Carlyle AKA Copycat. In the comics she’s a shape shifting mutant, and Wilson’s long term lover. This trailer doesn’t suggest any mutant powers for her, let’s wait and see what an extended one shows…
5. Weasel (TJ Miller)
This fast-talking nerd is Wade’s weapon smith and inventor. The two share a love/hate relationship, with Wade regularly taking anger and frustrations out on his unlucky cohort. As the trailer demonstrates, Weasel’s wisecracking and the bond between the two men is a recurring and essential aspect of the film. It’s certainly the first time that the concept of avocados having sex has been disused on screen…
4. Blind Al (Leslie Uggams)
To call the relationship between Wade and Al ‘odd’ is an understatement. Believed to be a target from his mercenary days, who he inexplicably spared, Al lives in a booby-trapped house, acting as a cleaner/cook/confidante for the deranged killer. Once again, it’s refreshing from the trailer that the film is not toning her abuse of her captor down in any way.
3. Ajax (Ed Skrein)
The chap stood talking to Wade prior to his treatment is believed to be Ajax, played by Ill manors and GoT actor Ed Skrien. A recurring antagonist in the comics, he’s an enforcer of the weapons program that Wade is treated by. Having had his nerve endings removed, he is immune to pain, with augmented speed and strength, and is dedicated to tracking and eliminating the failed subjects of the program.
2. Colossus (Andre Tricoteux)
1. Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand)
The creepy kid standing next to colossus on the bridge is the spectacularly named NTW. A telepathic member of Emma Frost’s Hellfire Club, enemies of the X-Men, she has the ability to predict the future. Again, the question is raised what she’s doing with Colossus, who seems to be acting as her protector, and what she wants from Wade
All in all, a very promising insight into the film. Reynolds clearly has the acting chops to tackle the role, and initial indications are that the script is faithful to the source material, and funny enough to keep the audience engaged.
