Eventually, Ben Affleck’s Batman will be getting his own slew of standalone movies with new story opportunities filled with new villains. In much of the internet discussion, one name has come up numerous times as to who that villain should be: The Red Hood. As a Batman fan, I can say that this would be one of the smartest moves Warner Brothers could make for numerous reasons.
The first is that given this is an older Batman, it would make sense to have an older Batman style story. The Under the Red Hood story arc is just that as it has Batman having years of experience and years of loss under his belt. The loss aspect would also be able to play heavily as that is one of the main themes of the Red Hood story.
The other main reason is for the villain himself, the Red Hood. The Red Hood is a character that has rapidly been growing in popularity over the past few years, including appearances in animated films and video games. The character could also stand out because he is different than any other Batman villain for several different reasons. The first is that he plays more as a rogue anti-hero with a vengeance than a straight evil character. This makes the character more intriguing and adds depth to the villain role. It would be a nice departure from the typical straight forward good guy versus bad guy as both characters deal heavily in the gray.
The last reason is the emotional connection to the Bats that Red Hood has that makes him such a great pick. The Red Hood is the second Robin who died and came back to life through dark means. The element of a deceased Robin was teased in the Batman v. Superman trailer, so Zack Synder left the door open to the possibility of a Red Hood appearances. Plus, being a former Robin, the Red Hood knows Batman better than any other villain ever could. He could become one of Batman’s greatest threats because he knows how Batman’s mind works. Thus, if done correctly Red Hood could be one of the best Batman villains in film we’ve ever gotten, if done and done correctly.
