Marvel is starting phase three this year and they decided to have an unfamiliar superhero to kick open the door. We’ve had our fill of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Hulk in the previous phrases and it’s time to start with some new faces. We’ve had a taste with The Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and a mouth full of Guardians of the Galaxy. Now it’s time for Marvel to keep adding to the roster of Avengers for the inevitable battle that will come with the Avengers: Infinity Wars. Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and the Inhumans will be shot into our pop-culture conscious in the upcoming years, but first, let’s get to know Ant-Man and why you should care about Marvel’s next hit.
Scott Lang, the family man. In previews of Ant-Man, Scott Lang is seen as a father and reformed former thief. But to give you a little bit of insight, he only stole so that he may provide a better living for his seriously ill daughter, Cassie Lang. Scott Lang in the comics is introduced in search of Dr. Erica Sondheim, the only doctor capable of saving his daughter. To make the stakes even higher, the story takes on a David and Goliath twist when Scott’s Ant-Man is force to battle with the villain known as Darren Cross, played by Corey Stoll in the film.
Since Ant-Man is part of the ever growing roster of Marvel films, there are bound to be crossovers. Throughout Scott Lang’s history, he’s come across many of the Marvel superheroes, Spider-Man being one of them. Since Sony and Marvel have finally teamed up, this deal is perfect for many opportunities for Scott to join our favorite web slinger. Another crossover in the MCU could open the door to a new Iron Man film. In Iron Man’s Armor Wars storyline, it is Scott Lang who helps Tony find the person who has been stealing the Iron Man technology. I don’t know about you, but seeing Robert Downey Jr. and Paul Rudd going back in forward would definitely be entertaining. Side note: Scott Lang’s Ant-Man has had many adventures with the Fantastic Four, but I’m not holding my breath for Fox and Marvel to even think of a possible partnership.
Like every Marvel superhero has its origin story, some must come to an end. In the events leading up to the Avenger Disassembled storyline, Scott Lang journey as the Ant-Man comes to an end thanks to a mad driven Scarlett Witch. A dark time in the Marvel Universe, but this inspires his daughter, Cassie, to take on the superhero mantel known as Stature and joins the Young Avengers. With many rumors of the MCU possibly killing off a hero or two to keep things interesting, this could be one of them. Now, I know this possibility may seem too soon but Marvel has been known to throw a curve ball or two out of nowhere that, in hindsight, worked. I.E The Mandarin twist in Iron Man 3 (shut up anyone who thinks that was a bad idea), Quicksilver’s death in Age of Ultron, even going far back as introducing Nick Fury. Besides, who doesn’t like that emotional punch for a heroes sacrifice?
Marvel has been on a winning streak with only one or two hiccups, but those haven’t stopped them from making hit after hit and dominate the box office. Given this film was in the process even before Iron Man was put into production, it should be worth your hard earned money. If not for the concept, story, cool looking effects, cast and the fact it’s a Marvel movie, at least you can enjoy the theater A/C from this “hell on earth” type summer.
