You know you’ve made it when you get the cover of Entertainment Weekly over Batman and Superman. Deadpool has always been a bit of a dark horse – when he wins, he has little to show for it and when he does the right thing, he gets little love for it. He’s under appreciated by the other characters in the Marvel Universe – seen as an annoyance at best and a psychotic at worst. I think that’s why he’s so popular, though. He’s funny and a lot of people can relate to him in that regard.
This is why it’s rewarding for me as a Deadpool fan to see my favorite red and black wise- ass getting some well-deserved spotlight:
Deadpool gives us the thumbs up and you can just see the big pie eating grin under that mask. Also, in true fourth wall breaking fashion, Deadpool decides to take this great opportunity to poke fun at Ryan Reynolds with his sexiest man alive joke.
I have only one fan-boy gripe. Why is the speech balloon white and not yellow?
With Marvel Studios and Sony absent from Hall H at Comic Con this year, it seems that with both Deadpool and X-Men Apocalypse are Star Wars and obviously Warner Brothers with Batman vs. Superman and Suicide Squad.
Will we get our first footage of Deadpool at Comic Con roughly a year after the test footage leak that saved the film from production hell? Can “The Merc With The Mouth” feature film debut help the X-franchise steal focus from Star Wars and the DC Cinematic Universe?
While Deadpool is popular, he’s hardly the icon of pop culture that Batman or Superman are. This doesn’t mean that the dark horse won’t have his day – we’ll just have to wait and see.
