While speaking to Entertainment Weekly about his role in Batman v Superman, Ben Affleck addressed the red horned Elephant in the room – Daredevil. In the interview, Affleck is quoted as saying “Daredevil didn’t work at all” and “if I wanted to go viral i would be less polite.” It seems Affleck partially blames the attitude of making superhero films at the time:
“That was before people realized you could make these movies and make them well. There was a cynical sense of put a red leather outfit on a guy, have him run around, hunt some bad guys, and cash the check.”
I personally believe Affleck is a bit too hard on Daredevil. Yes, the theatrical film didn’t work on many levels but the reason for that is that the film is a collection of disjointed scenes crammed together. The Director’s Cut has an extra 30 minutes of footage that ties the previously disjointed narrative together. While still possessing problems (the playground fight for one), I feel that if that cut was released into theaters – the film would have been more favorably received and possibly gotten that “Born Again” adaptation sequel. Then again, we might not have gotten Netflix’s Daredevil series – so I suppose it was for the best.
I myself don’t have a problem with Affleck as Daredevil, much like Ryan Reynolds in Green Lantern or Hugh Jackman in X-Men Origins. He did the best he could with the script he had to work with. If you watch the Directors Cut, you’ll notice he has great chemistry with everyone on screen. The improvised comedy in the extended cafe scene with Jon Favreau is great. Affleck and Garner obviously work well as a on screen couple.
Unlike most I wasn’t angry or even disappointed over Affleck’s Batman casting. I was, however, a bit puzzled over why a lesser known actor wasn’t given the shot. Like I said before, I thought he was a good Daredevil back in 2003 and he has definitely grown as an actor since then. This isn’t the Affleck who was “Da bomb in Phantoms” – this is the guy that has been snubbed twice for a Best Actor Nomination (Argo and Gone Girl).
Affleck is also one of my favorite directors as well. If he and Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio team up for an adaptation of Court of Owls, that movie will make 1 Billion in the first week because I will see it a thousand times – and drag my friends to see it as well.
