In a recent interview with io9, Kevin Feige has been talking about the planned slate for the next few years, he revealed that it might be possible for one of the upcoming films could be a flashback origin story:
“Certainly we could [set another one in the past]. There are no rules. I think the majority of them will be chronological, but not all of them necessarily.”
With the exception of Captain America: The First Avenger, which was set mostly during World War II, all of the Marvel films up to and including Ant-Man have been set in chronological order. Feige has previously said that the general rule is that the gap between release dates is the same as the gap between stories.
Of the films that have been announced, you would have to assume that it’s likely that one of these “flashback” stories will either be about Doctor Strange or Black Panther.
Steven Strange was referenced in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, so he’d obviously been known to S.H.I.E.L.D, so to tell his origin story would have to take us back. Chadwick Boseman is making his MCU debut in Civil War as Black Panther so if his standalone film is an origin tale, this will also have to take place “in the past”.
Captain Marvel is the kind of hero that the world would know about, and it would be a hard pill to swallow if she is ready to go in the standalone. Inhumans could be a flashback movie, but as it’s likely to be set in space, it wouldn’t make much difference. And, as has been widely reported, Spider-Man will be a fully fledged hero already in Civil War and I don’t think Marvel and Sony need to do another Spidey origin.
As always, Feige’s comments leave a lot to the imagination, so we’ll have to wait and see what Marvel has planned.
