It’s been rumored for a while now, but Ava DuVernay has been hired by Marvel Studios to direct Chadwick Boseman. It was first reported back in May that she was being courted for either Captain Marvel or Black Panther, and the latter seems like an obvious yet interesting choice.
Marvel has a history of hiring exciting directors for their films, such as Kenneth Branagh, Shane Black and Jon Favreau, and the director of the acclaimed Selma is one who could bring a singular vision to the country of Wakanda and it’s King, T’Challa, aka the Black Panther.
Selma is the critically acclaimed story of Dr. Martin Luther King and his campaign to secure equal voting rights for African-Americans, which was one of the most important parts of the civil rights movement of the 1960s.
Not much is known about the Black Panther movie, as the screenplay is still in progress, but here’s hoping that DuVernay can bring some of the same sensibilities of her previous effort across into the world of comic book movies.
The film will bring together Black Panther (Boseman) and Ulysses Klaw (Andy Serkis, who was last seen in Age of Ultron) in conflict over the valuable and rare metal Vibranium, which is what Captain America’s iconic shield is fashioned from. Black Panther is scheduled for release in July 2018.
However before that, we will see Black Panther alongside either Cap or Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War, coming out in May 2016.
