Crushing even the most optimistic box office forecasts (most of the ones I looked at predicted numbers around $90-$110 million) Jurassic World has made a phenomenal $204 million in North America and $511 million worldwide in its first weekend. While the domestic number couldn’t quite beat the record set by The Avengers in 2012 ($207 million), the worldwide number is easily a new all-time record. A finish north of $1.5 billion is a guarantee at this point and I’m betting Jurassic Park 5 will be announced shortly. Between Furious 7 ($1.5 billion and counting) and this, it’s definitely been a good summer for Universal.
Last week’s #1 movie Spy took second place with $16 million and a domestic total of $56.9 million. The Mellissa McCarthy led comedic action movie is on par with what last year’s Tammy was at this point (also $56.9 million). Of course Spy’s budget is quite a bit bigger than Tammy’s ($65 million vs. $20 million) so these numbers might be a bit disappointing for Fox. Holdovers San Andreas, Insidious 3, and Pitch Perfect 2 took 3rd, 4th, and 5th place with $11 million, $7.3 million, and $6 million respectively. Here are the full results:
