James Wan, director of The Conjuring and Furious 7, has officially been announced as the director for the upcoming Aquaman film starring Jason Momoa. This comes as Warner Brothers are trying to make Aquaman seem more mainstream and less like a comic book punch line.
Variety spoke with Warner Bros.’ Greg Silverman:
“We’ve been so lucky to have worked with James, first on New Line’s ‘The Conjuring’ and now on their upcoming ‘The Conjuring 2,’ and are thrilled to have him on board as we continue to expand our DC slate,” said Silverman. “The ‘Aquaman’ film will be a major tentpole picture for us, and James’ span of work has proven him able to take on any manner of project, bringing his incredible creative talent and unique voice to the material.”
For many years, Aquaman has been the butt of many pop culture jokes as many people simply knew him as the blond haired superhero that lived in water. I have long been an advocate of Aquaman especially since his rebirth in the New 52. The casting of Jason Momoa is perfect for the image of Aquaman and having more people take him seriously. He could be like Khal Drogo except have to deal with both land and sea dwellers.
The addition of Wan makes me both excited and intrigued. I am excited as I found The Conjuring a truly terrifying film in a time where good horror is hard to find. It does make me a bit curious as to what the tone for this movie will be. It will certainly be more serious, because its DC, but other than that I don’t really know what to expect with this film and I’m excited about that. As a comic fan, I can only hope they do Aquaman justice and he is no longer the pop culture punch line.
What do you guys think about James Wan being the director for Aquaman?
