While Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Batman franchise is regarded as one of the best ever by fans and critics, apparently, the film’s star Christian Bale has mixed feelings about his time playing the iconic character. In a new interview with Variety, the actor expressed some deep thoughts on playing the role, saying:
“Mixed emotions about it. I’m always eternally grateful to [director] Chris [Nolan]. For instance, Rescue Dawn, Werner [Herzog] and I had been trying to put that together for a few years. American Psycho, Mary Harron and I had been trying to put that together for a few years. No one was interested. Why? Me. Suddenly everyone said, ‘Yeah, alright. We’ll go with him.’ It did change everything. It was the first time I had done a film of that magnitude. That was a real learning curve for me. I wrestled with it for a long time. I still do on occasions. But I’m just learning, hey, accept the good things.”
Could Bale try and reedem his own personal thoughts on his role by playing another superhero in the future? Not likely, according to what Bale had to say back in April:
“No, I’m not interested in doing that. I’ve never seen — I’m trying to think if that’s correct, I think I’m actually correct, I can’t remember a single superhero film that I’ve ever watched. Apart from the ones I made and like, the Christopher Reeve Superman films.”
As far as the future of Batman, Matt Reeves is set to direct a Batman trilogy soon, with or without Ben Affleck. Reeves has said it’ll be different than The Dark Knight franchise, though he was a big fan of those films:
“The Dark Knight, which I think is an incredible movie, the thing that really resonates about that is The Joker … his story and that performance, and everything about the filmmaking that relates to that character – it’s his (Heath Ledger’s) movie. And I think Christian Bale is great, but I think that that movie movie really resonated with everyone because of that character (The Joker), its portrayal, and the way that the movie presented his unsettling perspective and the way that crashed up against Batman. I think I am interested in being even more inside of Batman.”
You can currently see Christian Bale in Hostiles, which is in theaters now.
