It was revealed earlier this month that Sony set aside the date October 5, 2018 for the release of Venom. As of right now the only person attached to the film is screenwriter Dante Harper. However, it appears Sony is aiming to start shooting in the fall of 2017, so there’s likely going to be more names attached to the project in the coming months. It also appears that the film is being considered a “sci-fi horror”.
The film also will not include any connections to Marvel’s upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming, or any of Sony’s prior Spider-Man films. Its continuity will remain entirely new and separate from the Spider-Man name, which makes one wonder how the film will work.
Originally, in the Spider-Man comics, Venom made his first appearance in 1988. The character was an alien symbiote that required a human host to survive. And, in return, it gave the host superhuman capabilities. Venom was given a wide range of appearances over the years, beginning as a villain and more recently a superhero.
We can expect more official news about the film in coming months, and hopefully get an idea of who will be attached to direct and star. And just how in the hell it’ll work without Spider-Man.
In the meantime, you can see Spider-Man on the big screen this July (July 7th, to be exact) when Spider-Man: Homecoming is released.
