After making $1.5 billion dollars at the box office, thanks to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, it seems as if Warner Brothers are more than happy with the way things are currently going with their DC properties. Although both films didn’t go down too well with critics, Warner Brothers still seem to hold high hopes for the DC Cinematic Universe. Afterall, fan reaction was more positive and Suicide Squad still continues to hit the headlines thanks to its soundtrack which has recently been nominated for 5 Grammy awards.
With the recent news that Gotham City Sirens is currently in development with David Ayer at the helm, many people have started to wonder about the status of Suicide Squad 2.
We reported on some DCEU leaks back in August, and like most of the rumors on that list, it said that Suicide Squad 2 was being planned for release after 2020. Per the leak:
Suicide Squad 2 will happen though after 2020, likely to be 2021. Will have a slightly altered roster. It also will not be directed by David Ayer.
Well, The Hollywood Reporter have recently confirmed that a sequel is currently in the works although it’s still in the very early stages of development. Not much is known about the Suicide Squad 2 however David Ayer teased in August that a story was being written and if rumors are to be believed, we might be seeing an R-rated version of everybody’s favorite gang of criminals. With all things considered, this is hardly a surprise when one looks at the success of Deadpool although I’m sure a final decision will be made once Logan has been released.
The Hollywood Reporter has also stated that a Deadshot solo film is also in the works which is hardly surprising news considering Will Smith A-Lister status. Once again, nothing is really known about the movie although it’ll be interesting to see where they’ll go with the character and how he’ll fit in with the DCCU.
Although Warner Brothers has taken some stick over the past year it seems as if they’ve not let any of the negative press get in the way of going full throttle with their plans for the DCCU. Let’s just hope they’ve learnt their lesson from previous movies and allow the directors to fulfil their vision as originally intended.
