Although Black Widow has become an increasingly popular character in the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s still a lot to her backstory that has been missing. It seems that almost wasn’t the case, however, as a deleted scene from Captain America: Civil War would’ve given much more insight to the character.
Though the scene was never filmed, MoviePilot acquired a description of it from the movie’s “Junior Novelization”. Here we see more of Natasha’s training that was first depicted in Avengers: Age of Ultron. You can read the novelization excerpt below:
Natasha studied Cap’s expression of resolve. Finally, she said, ‘In Russia, in the Red Room, there were dozens of us. All girls, all young. We lived together. They let us be friends. Then they dropped us in the tundra, two weeks’ walk from home, with just enough supplies for one of us to survive.’ Cap looked at her, understanding her meaning. ‘Don’t let them push us into the cold,’ she said.”
Black Widow is set to receive her own film for Phase 4 of the Cinematic Universe, so perhaps we’ll see more of her past then.
Captain America: Civil War will be released on Digital HD September 2nd and on Blu-Ray/DVD September 13th.
