The Netflix reach of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is on a roll. And it’s just snowballing, gaining more momentum as it moves along. Hot off the second season of Daredevil, there’s much clamor for the future. Jessica Jones’s boyfriend, Luke Cage, is next on the docket. Then Cage’s best friend, Iron Fist, whom is certain to make his debut on Luke Cage, will have his own show. But what’s to become of Punisher and Elektra?
What we do know is that Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and Daredevil will team up to form the Defenders. But who will they team up against? Surely, the villain will be a common enemy. Members of the Serpent Society will slither their way onto Luke Cage. Perhaps they’ll fight the whole team of snake-themed baddies.
Or – according to an anonymous source close to the situation, they’ll fight a totally new baddie:
“Marvel is talking about setting Mephisto as the prime antagonist for The Defenders. Some may say that this villain wouldn’t fit the TV shows but that’s why they’re incorporating Iron Fist – to set up the supernatural element. This would also help set up the next phase of the Netflix shows, as Moon Knight, Blade, and Ghost Rider are being considered.”
Al Pacino expressed his desire to join the MCU a while back. Many fan-casts were for Mephisto, since he basically played him in The Devil’s Advocate.
According to the Marvel Encyclopedia:
“Mephisto is an extradimensional demon of immense power who often poses as Satan. He continually schemes to make bargains with people for their souls. Mephisto especially covets the souls of heroes for their purity and has repeatedly sought the soul of the noble Silver Surfer. Mephisto has also contended with Thor, Doctor Strange, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four, and many others.”
It’s too bad Fox owns Silver Surfer. As an original member of the Defenders, I would have liked to see him battle the guy.
Besides Iron Fist, the MCU will explore more of the supernatural realm with Dr. Strange. It has been a rumor for a while now that Netflix is considering other heroes such as Moon Knight and Blade. Mephisto could be the Loki of this realm. There’s been rumor that he’ll butt heads with Benedict Cumberbatch’s Strange at the end of next year’s flick, or a sequel. The Defenders of the comics are usually dealing with some sort of supernatural villain, like Nightmare or Dormammu. Therefore, someone like Mephisto would be great way to tie this realm together.
What do you think? Do you think The Defenders will or should battle Mephisto? If not, who do you think they should fight? The Serpent Society? Fin Fang Foom?
